Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about Colloquies.
The Basics
What is Colloquies?
Colloquies is your digital Living Room, a place for meaningful conversations with small groups of people you trust. Every week, your circle receives one thoughtful question (a Colloquy) to answer together. It's designed to help you stay close to the people who matter, even when life keeps you apart.
What is a Circle?
A Circle is a private group of 2-8 people who share weekly Colloquies together. Think of it as a dedicated space for a specific group in your life: your college friends, your family, your book club, your partner. Each circle has its own conversations and history.
What is a Colloquy?
A Colloquy is a meaningful question or prompt designed to spark genuine conversation. It could be a text prompt ("What's a belief you've changed your mind on?"), an image to react to, a short video to discuss, or an article to read together. Each week brings a new Colloquy tailored to your circle.
What is a Chapter?
A Chapter is the weekly conversation thread around a Colloquy. It runs from Monday at midnight to Sunday at midnight. Once you answer the week's Colloquy, you can see others' responses and chat freely until the Chapter closes. Then a new Chapter begins with a fresh question.
How It Works
How does blind answering work?
You can't see anyone else's response until you submit your own answer. This eliminates groupthink. Your answer is truly yours, uninfluenced by what others have said. Once you answer, you immediately unlock the Chapter and can see all previous responses and continue the conversation in real-time.
When do new Colloquies arrive?
A new Colloquy is published every Monday at 12:01 AM in your timezone. You have until Sunday at 11:59 PM to answer and participate in the Chapter. It's a weekly rhythm designed to create a consistent ritual without overwhelming your schedule.
What if I miss a week?
If you don't answer by Sunday night, the Chapter closes and you won't be able to see that week's conversation. But don't worry—a fresh Colloquy arrives Monday morning. The weekly reset means there's always a new opportunity to participate.
How are Colloquies chosen for my circle?
Colloquies are selected based on your circle's type (friends, family, partners, colleagues), the categories you've chosen (philosophy, sports, personal growth, etc.), and how long your circle has been together. New circles get lighter icebreaker questions, while established circles receive deeper prompts.
Circles & Members
How many people can be in a circle?
Circles are limited to 2-8 people. This is intentional: small enough to feel intimate like a living room conversation, but large enough for diverse perspectives. The sweet spot is usually 3-5 people.
Can I be in multiple circles?
Yes! You can join multiple circles for different groups in your life. The free plan lets you join up to 15 circles and create/admin up to 5. Paid plans offer unlimited circles.
How do I invite people to my circle?
When you create a circle, you can invite friends via a share link (works with any messaging app), email, or by sharing an invite code. Invited friends download the app and join using your invite. No accounts needed until they're ready to join.
Can I remove someone from a circle?
Circle admins (the person who created the circle) can add or remove members at any time. If you need to make changes, go to your circle settings. Removed members lose access to future Chapters but their past contributions remain in the archive.
Privacy & Security
Is my data secure?
Yes. All messages are end-to-end encrypted using industry-standard cryptography. Your encryption keys are stored only on your device—we never have access to read your conversations. Your reflections belong to your circle alone.
Do you sell my data or show ads?
Never. We don't sell data, show ads, or mine your conversations for any purpose. Our business model is simple: we charge for premium features. You're the customer, not the product.
What happens if I lose my phone?
Your encryption keys are backed up to the cloud, encrypted with your password. Sign in on your new phone with your password and your keys will be restored, giving you access to your circles and conversation history.
What if I forget my password?
Your password is the only way to decrypt your private encryption key. If you forget it, your key cannot be recovered and you'll lose access to your encrypted messages. We recommend using a password manager to keep your password safe.
Responses & Content
How can I respond to a Colloquy?
You can respond with text, voice messages, images, or short videos. Once you've submitted your initial response, you can continue chatting in the Chapter with any of these formats.
Can I suggest my own Colloquy?
With paid plans, you can propose custom Colloquies for your circle. Any circle member can suggest a question, and the circle admin approves which ones get used. It's a great way to personalize the experience for your group.
Getting Started
How do I get started?
Download Colloquies on iOS or Android, create an account, and start your first circle. Invite the people you want to connect with more deeply, and wait for Monday—your first Colloquy will be waiting.
Do all circle members need the app?
Yes, Colloquies is mobile-only for now. All circle members need to download the app on iOS or Android. This helps us maintain security and provide the best experience. A web version may come in the future.
